School Community Based Safety Collaborative
The Community Based Safety Collaborative has been an important part of Los Angeles Unified School District Local District 7 efforts to create and sustain a safe school environment since 2003. Collaborative efforts have resulted in a significant decrease, as much as 20% to %40, in crime stats over a sustained period in the areas around their schools. “The purpose of the collaborative is to work with the school and community to identify school safety, climate and student behavior challenges preventing students from reaching their highest academic achievement.”
The collaborative makes specific plans and commitments for improving school safety and student behavior, evaluates and assesses progress, and provides support. The collaborative at Locke High, Fremont High, Manual Arts and Jordan High were established by the Los Angeles Unified School District Youth Relations office and The Local District 7 Operations & Safety Coordinator. Agencies participate on one or more collaborative. These agencies have included the Los Angeles School Police Department, the Los Angeles City Human Relations Commission, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations, the US Department of Justice Community Relations Service, Office of the Attorney General Crime and Violence Prevention Center, Los Angeles County Probation Department, the Los Angeles District Attorneys Office. The Los Angeles Unified School District Youth Relations Office, the Los Angeles Unified School District Operations and Safety Coordinator (co-chair), the Department of Children and family Services, the Housing Authority, the Los Angeles Fire Department, Y.S.O.P, We Care Out Reach Ministries, Stop the Violence Increase the Peace Foundation, West Angeles Community Mediation Center, County Wide Criminal Justice Coordination Committee, the school principal, the United Teachers of Los Angeles Chapter Chair, a parent, and a student.
Collaborative activities have included Safe Passages initiatives, violence prevention using Gang Intervention Specialist, “resource mapping” of the area around the school, a “Day of Dialogue” including classroom discussions and a written survey of 600 student and staff attitudes toward safety issues on and around the school, hosted a one day off campus student summit designed to empower students to manage conflict through the art of mediation.

2) Averting disruptions in an effort to remain focused on the goal of learning
3) De-escalating potential violence on or near campus
4) Getting to and from school safely.
