Michael L Hopwood Bio

Mike Hopwood is a California native and sought-after speaker, educator, and administrator of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Mike Hopwood is a graduate of Arizona State University with a B.A. in Education, and holds a Masters Degree  in both Education Administration from National University and Biblical Theology from Esther Mallet International Bible University, Downey, California where he taught classes in both Old Testament and New Testament Research. He has over 26 years as an educator and community servant. He is a former School Board President and consultant on Human Relations, School Safety, and Threat Assessment. Formerly a member of the Board of Directors Associated Pomona Teachers, in January of 2007 he was appointed to the Los Angeles Unified School District Human Relations Council and is a founding member of the Education is a Civil Right Committee, member California African-American Superintendents and Administrators - CAAASA , member Western Regional Council on Educating Black Children.  Michael Hopwood is the Coordinator of Operations and Safety for the Los Angeles Unified School District Local District 7, providing operational leadership, training and support by guiding and coaching principals in the areas of school operations; including school safety, school emergencies, school safety plans, and overseeing the establishment of School Community Safety Collaborative.

Mike is a graduate of the Association of California School Administrators Principal Academy and Awarded “Senior Associate” by the California School Leadership Academy (2004). He has held the positions of: President of the Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees, Board of Directors Associated Pomona Teachers, California Teachers Association State Council, Chairperson of the California Teachers Association-City of Compton Joint Future Search Committee and Chairperson of Compton High 100 year Celebration Committee.

Mike Hopwood served on the Watts Gang Task Force, Assembly Member Karen Bass 47th Assembly District Education Commission, The County Wide Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, the Los Angeles County Inter-Agency Gang Task Force and the Education is a Civil Right Committee.

Growing up in Watts and Compton and having experienced the pain of his parents divorce, gang violence, the tragic death of loved ones and the racism of his era, Mike Hopwood founded Secrets of Success Restoration Life Association, a faith based non-profit association dedicated to building communities, one life at a time, through evangelism; world outreach and civic engagement; biblical counseling; and the restoration of families.



Mike Hopwood was Compton High Student Body President and Captain of the undefeated state and national championship basketball team. His team was named National Champions by Sporting News his senior year after going 32-0 and began the record for the most victories without a loss in California CIF history at 62-0. In 2011 the teams success earned them a place among ESPN Salute to all-time FAB 50 No. 1s A detailed listing of the all-time No. 1 prep basketball teams. Mike was named the Most Valuable Player of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section State Championship. As Captain of the basketball team, he earned All State, and All-American Honors at Compton High School.

Mike Hopwood went on to play four years at Arizona State University and two years with Athletes in Action, an athletic ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. He was invited to free agent camp for the ABA San Diego Conquistadors (Los Angeles Clippers) and Dallas Chaparrals before joining the ABA’s Virginia Squires free agent rookie camp. He played five years professionally in Europe where he averaged 27.03 points per game, scoring 53 points in a playoff game against Racing Club of Paris. His teams won national titles on two continents and three countries including division II titles in France and Switzerland.. Mike Hopwoods coaching career included Assistant Basketball Coach at Cal State Los Angeles as well as Head Coaching positions at Los Angeles David Star Jordan High School and Ganesha High School in Pomona, California.
